@SNOWPATROL Barkeley nah these days with the exception of maybe 10-15% of the nba everyone just drives to the basket or they shoot the 3…. In that era guys had a multiple of offensive qualities, from mid range to low post to side baseline jumpers….back then over 50% percent of the NBA had these skills, from big men to small guys

I don't know if I'd say 80s offenses were effective. Highlights hide the 8 possessions back and forth of missed mid ranged jumpers. It wasn't effective. The best was probably the late 80s, early 90s Utah PnR but even that put an emphasis on long ranged pick and pop with Malone and Stockton while minimizing the perimeter guys. The numbers are pretty clear on this, modern NBA is the most effective (efficient) version of the game; even if it's not the cage matches that these older rivalries provided.

Larry did whatever his team needed him to do to win, rebounds, blocks, fouls, steals, passing, scoring, you see some games only maybe 20 points, but he’d have 25 boards and 9 assists. Crazy. And how does a guy that slow get steals???

@it’s “You’re” 😐 not “Your” Compared to some other NBA players (T-Mac, Grant Hill etc.), he at least had the chance to showcase his skills at the highest level (MVPs/championships etc.) and is one of the most iconic players ever. Although Magic had to stop playing due to his HIV, at that time he was fully developed player - Larry was getting better every year until his injury. Shame, cause even if he would be the same player, the injury costed him his longevity, and we didn't get to see MJ vs Bird series at the peak of their strenght.

He was entering his prime at 30, so we'll never know what healthy Larry was capable of. There might have been another gear that he never got to switch due to his injury, but we'll never know for sure.

@Christopher Miller Jordan had to wait for all the legends who kept shutting him down to retire, the bulls only gained dominance because other better teams lost their great players, like bird and magic. Jordan couldn't get past bird in the playoffs to even get to the finals. I don't think it's a coincidence because Jordan wasn't a basketball superstar during that era.

@Matthew Volkstorf Nah, if anything being white helps Bird because it puts him in a position where he's it. The great white hope. Who else is there, Mikan? Stockton? Nash? Walton? If he was just one of many he'd be lost in the crowd the way *many* of the black greats have been. Nobody is going to forget the greatest white player to live.

Hace 11 días
Ron King

Because he's not. He *might* not have even been the best player on his own team. Those late 70s early 80s Celtics were rosters of future HOF players. He probably was the best of the bunch, but the fact that an argument could be made otherwise, even a weak one; is something you cannot have as GOAT. As great as Pippen was, perhaps the greatest 3 to ever play the game; nobody would argue that he might eclipse Jordan. There are a myriad of other reasons, his career numbers just don't stack up for one. He was never a dominant, take over a game guy, though he could score with will those Celtics teams were too stacked for one guy to do it. He's not even Rushmore. Top 10? Perhaps. Top 20? All but certainly. Think modern day KD. HOF for sure, but for those that think he challenges *anyone* let alone Jordan or Lebron? That's silly. Every single team he's played on since Russell Westbrook was drafted, an argument could be made that he was the 2nd best player on the team, and in some cases (Westbrook, Harden) (Kyrie, Harden) (Steph, Klay) the *third* best player. It's all up for argument for sure, but that's the problem. Nobody that has ever played next to Lebron, even AD, even Kyrie, challenges Lebron as best player on the team.

Grant wasn't a great defender. He was an understized 4/5 that had a knack for rebounding and was solid on offense. He played in an era dominated by D-First bigs: Hakeem, Robinson, Mutombo, Ewing. Bird was the greatest of all time. If he had one 1/4 of any of the other greats athleticism it wouldn’t even be a debate. His basketball IQ is so far ahead of everyone else’s. If he played right now he wouldn’t even have to worry about back issues cause there’s no defense played. He’d average about 45-50 a game and have the whole league in mental health counseling.

@Josiah Kratz you have to watch the whole games. You can't get the full picture just from highlights. For example, you could hand check and hip check guys off the ball, making it harder to get open to get the ball in the first place. That's just 1 example. There are plenty more

Hace 13 días
Blurple Bear
Blurple Bear

@Josiah Kratz Well you have to also understand that they were not allowed to play zone defense like they are now and you could actually hand check people back then which made it way more difficult to actually take a shot and get open. Watch the drives to the lane and the contact that happens on every play. That is what distinguishes this generation of men playing basketball from the pussies that play it today. There's not one guy right now who could physically hold up to that style for as long as most of the greats from that time did. Even the screens being set then as compared to now are totally different. The NBA has been a joke for almost 20 years at this point because they have taken out the grind of what it takes to make it through a whole season. That used to be a skill you needed to have, to be physically tough enough to make it through. Now guys take 25 rest games a year off when they aren't even barely getting touched during the games either. You ever see MJ take a day off in the mid season against a team that was 5-29? That never happened. Cause he's not a pussy like the new wave.

Larry Bird era un jugadorazo, probablemente el mejor jugador BLANCO de la NBA en su historia.

Bird with a crushed back and in traction after every game and didn't want to sign because of the extreme pain but did so out of respect for the owner who begged him and yet he's on the floor dominating every player he goes against by blocking stealing out shooting and being clutch when it matters. He had to be in extreme pain in this long drawn out game.

Amazing how different the game was. No zone D, way less 3's, you were unwanted in the league if you couldn't play physical D, and hit the 15 footer.

Larry’s jumper is so clean. Guy had excellent fundamentals and was an amazing competitor. Him and MJs relationship is so great because while they are so different, they are also kindred spirits in their mentality.

@jason moukala i put bird and magic in the same tier. I basically consider them the same. And since i consider bird as good as i do, i put magic just as good at him. The reason why magic and bird were numver 1 and 2 all time in win% (until kawhi was blessed early in his career by playing for dynasty spurs then going to a raptors team that had been together for over 5 seasons with playoff experience) to become number 1 all time in win%) is because they knew the ART of unselfishness... cut from the cloth of bill russell himself... they knew how to win IMMEDIATELY upon entering the nba. Imtangibles are FAR more relevant than we give credit and lebron despite having better accolades (mostly due to longevity) can never be ahead of magic and bird imo.... not to mention that the 80s to the end of 90s is the golden era of the nba

With Bird on one great team, Jordan on the other great team, you know you are going to see some great B Ball. Jordan had the scoring stats and most of the things he did were countable. Bird had stand out scoring stats, assists, rebounds and blocks and a lot of talents that would be difficult to quantify into stats. He had talents like seeing the whole floor, figuring out what was about to happen on the court, being in the right place at the right time, the ability to get his shot off against anybody, and often in their face, just to name a few. Jordan had many of those qualities, also, just not quite at bird's level in some of those named "intangibles". Jordan could get a shot off, for sure.

10:00-10:04 Pippen’s post defense on bird as bird backs down is so beautiful to watch. The knees that don’t give in, the sliding feet and the pesky jabs at the ball, let alone the two subsequent blocks. It’s like playing offense on defense if you know what I mean. They really don’t play D with this kinda tenacity anymore. Kobe in his prime was really the last one.

Hace un año
Ron King
Ron King

Nah, Kobe's D was garbage for the most part. He'd lead the league in steals, only to surrender terrible oFG%. People loved that he was Kobe and it didn't hurt that he played in an era in which there were no great d-first 2s. There are a handful of players in the modern era that are tenacious as well as technically sound. PatBev, Chris Paul, Paul George, Kawhi, Draymond, Giannis (if a bit out of control at times), Gobert, Simmons, Smart. While team D has suffered with switching schemes and lazy transition D, individual defensive efforts remain as good as ever. Everyone listed here could play at any time in this league and still be considered great defenders.

I would take bird over Jordan. His stats, IQ, awareness on the court was so amazing. Jordan had incredible athletic ability and could penetrate the paint no doubt about it, but bird has the edge. Compare their stats join equal years on playing since Bird has to retire early.

What a time to be alive. Rare to see two greats go at it like this. Both MJ and Bird playing confidently to their strengths. Both men hitting contested shot after contested shot, ice water pumping through their veins. Both teams stacked and hungry, playing hard defense until the bitter end.

@Saph Adams The truth is actually Bird was pretty athletic. Just not as much as Jordan. But he understood the game and had just as high a level of competitiveness and desire to win. Both men were skilled. At this level it’s all a matter of the will. Who wants it more!
