Retired astronaut Chris Hadfield helps debunk (and confirm!) some common myths about space. Is there any sound in space? Does space smell like burnt steak? Is NASA working on warp speed?

YOU MEAN HIS LIES ? as if you can go there and verify it or anything else he says. I would give him to much creditability. Just because he's being nice doesn't mean he's telling the truth. It's kind of like, Stabbing someone, Twisting the knife looking into their face , twisting the knife all while smiling and asking you if your ok.

Wow, I really never had thought about the sun being essentially the loudest single source of sound in the solar system… It's just that we can't hear it because of what commander Hadfield explains here. So. The sun is SUPER noisy! Wild stuff!! As a side note, I am incredibly honored to have met commander Hadfield at a book signing in Dallas about seven years ago! Still a highlight of my time here in Dallas (okay… One of the highlights of my life :-)

Thing is we never get to hear it because. No human can survive a second without a spacesuit in space

What happens if you have an itch in your nose while in the space suit ? Or you suddenly have to sneeze ? Do you just have to quell that feeling using mind over body , or is there something built in? @asleepinthealley the difference between 1 atmosphere and a vacuum is less than a thousandth of the difference between 1 atmosphere and the bottom of the marianas trench. it's far easier to have 101.3 kPa surrounded by 0 kPa than it is to have 101.3 kPa surrounded by 110 MPa. that's not even what globalism means

i never thought about the fact that the sun is constantly *screaming* and we just can’t hear it because of how sound travels. that’s so fascinating
Hace 2 añosDean G
@ItsATrap! No, that is not why the speed of sound varies with altitude. The speed of sound varies with temperature and temperature varies with altitude. That is why the speed of sound is lower at higher altitude.

So I did quite a lot of thought experiments on explosions in space, and non sun explosions (like a space-ship) would contain air and particles that would explode and hit the hull of the space ship you are in, and that would carry sound (only once it hits your hull). I have no idea exactly how it would sound, but I believe there would be something.
Hace un mesAna Ng
sure, if sound travels through to you, you'll hear it. how well it'll travel through to you is probably a question better posed to jack swigert, jim lovell, and fred haise

Hace 29 díasMike Andrews +1
The only ways to hear a star, besides through radio waves, would either be going into it's chromosphere, or being hit by enough particles to negate the vacuum of space. Either way, a human observer would be dead, though maybe with enough time we'll have tech to allow audio recordings of stars (or at least of Sol {The Sun}). It's just as, if not more, likely as ever actually discovering plausible FTL travel. There could conceivably be a universe full of life, with no possible way to ever actually physically interact with each other on a major societal level. Generation ships could be the only possibility. I hope not, but it's the most likely current scenario.

On the last one, the germs, I used to be involved in making machines called 'Cold Isostatic Presses', which is a simple 3 dimensional press, being that things are pressed via fluid surrounding them being pressurised. Pressures of 100,000 psi are common, mostly used to forge various materials in powder form to solids, and one of their uses is pressing food to those extreme pressures for space travel, as the pressure kills all the bacteria during the process, interesting stuff.

4:00 he explained Einsteins relativity all wrong though. The concept is lag or latency. If you had 2 clocks, synchronous to show same and move one clock 1 light sec away, it would show different of 1 sec. If you move the clock two light secs away, it show a difference of 2s and so. They don't age differently. It's just lag or latency.

Hace un messpookilyookily
Yeah I figured instant asphyxiation outside of the suit in space. Even if you fry or freeze, it'll be over before you know it. And the steak smell I suspect you are correct. Sort of reminds me of Ontario Place when they first opened 😂 And energy - yes an immense speed is required just to GET to speed, likely a gravity force on an element, but maybe Musk's team is working on something, seeing that they have oodles of money (currently...no pun intended) at their disposal. So eloquently presented, thank you so much!
