@Paul Hartley did you watch the whole movie? he cracked because he was so arrogant that he couldn't stand not saying it.. he "did his job and would do it again", and so deeply resents having to explain himself to a pretty-boy lawyer (or anyone really) that remaining silent felt weak to him. He wants to assert dominance in every situation, so it got the best of him here.

I love the colonel acting, it shows how people who spent their life in the army can have a vastly different logical thinking. He is 100% convinced that what he did was right and has no shame of admitting it. Edit: I understand that marines are different than the army in the US, but I was making a broader point where pretty much all soldiers have an experience which gives them another prospective and a different logical thinking than someone who never had to participate in conflict.

Love this scene. The power of the way it's delivered by Nicholson. The truth in the words he spoke. The prevailing truth as well though, in his arrest at the end. His character, like many real characters, doesn't understand the power of his position. He's trapped in the importance of what he does, so much, that he begins to believe, it's all that matters. Above all else. The genius of the writing in the scene is perfectly cemented by his feigned shock that he's being charged with a crime. Even though he knows he committed one. He truly believes it should be overlooked in the interests of his goal. Will always be a masterpiece of filmmaking.

Well, he's kinda right about what he does. There is no world where everybody's happy, so military has to defend their interests selfishly. Except he should've transferred the guy before the accident, I'm sure someone more motivated would apply for marine position. Instead he tried to make marine out of non-marine material. Such kind of psychological training and pressure should be applied for soldiers who happened to be at army involuntarily to bring them up to speed about how things on war actually are, but not for the supposed motivated professionals, where best of the best are selected during peace time.

That's not feigned shock - that's real, which makes his indignation all the more powerful. He knows what he did was against the "rules" but he believes he's above those rules and/or they don't apply to him, and how dare the mere mortals in the justice system charge him, the almighty, with a crime.

Jack Nicholson had played phenomenal. The script is awesome. Acting is legendary. One of the best and most sophisticated portrayals of an antagonist character. In fact, most of what the colonel said is true and he prosecuted himself already. He says: "We follow orders or people die. It's just that simple." That's exactly what happened: The colonel didn't follow his superior commander admiral's explicit written order forbidding the code red. As a result of his disobedience, people (Santiago and Markinson) died. In fact, he found himself guilty, and that might be the reason he confessed.

If I remember right the 'airman witnesses' were a bluff. They were there to testify they can recall no flight happening outside of the official logbook :) But the Colonel didn't know that.
