Los Angeles Rams fans can take a sigh of relief on the Aaron Donald retirement rumors. The three-time defensive player of the year re-structured his contract for a monster three-year, $95 million deal. This makes him the highest-paid non-quarterback in history. Donald is also arguably one of the best defensive players of all time. Marcellus Wiley and Emmanuel Acho share their Top 5 defensive players of all-time. Who is missing from their lists?

If 2 time defensive player of the year,4 time SB champion ,considered by several pundits to be the player of the 70's decade Mean Joe Greene isn't amongst the top NFL top 5 all time defensive players then the lists is obsolutely bogus . 2 gentlemen who I respect emmensly for their ability to diagnose the deep ,intricate ,nuances of a narrative as oppose to being exsclusively captivated with low hanging fruit stats ,this disappoints me . Joe Greene sacrificed personal stats " sacks"in order to help elevate the players around him by tying up blockers and being a pronounced run stuffing DT first ,before channeling his direction towards the QB ,the ultimate definition of a team player ,he literally made everyone around him better then they would have been without him,Lambert playing ILB at just 215 to 220lbs never had to encounter offensive lineman ,he ran free ,unsolicited on tackles frequently ,so did his other Hof left outside backer teammate ,Jack Ham. Joe Greene's dominate presence nurtured 4 hofers on defense, was the essence " not Lambert" of one if the greatest defenses in NFL history ,which was dominate for almost a entire decade . How , objectively is .Mean Joe Greene not a top 5 all time Great player ? Name me another defenduve player who's impact was more significant inthe history of the game in terms of his teams long top tier defense for a decade which translated to more NFL/ SB wins ?

Most analyst when considering how the player impacted games and history include as best defensive player of all time LT and Prime at the top. One had players afraid of their lives and the other had QBs afraid of using half of the field (not to mention because it is not defense but he has coaches afraid of punting as well - extra defensive pressure) Reggie, Ray, Bruce are often mentioned.

Hace 2 meses
Brenda Firebrand +3

I have just always felt that Lawrence Taylor was the best player of all time - the reason is because he could dominate a game without the ball in his hands. That's crazy to me! He also made Left Tackle one of the most sought after positions to protect the QB.

I have to go with who made the biggest impact on the game when they played so for me 1) LT - a man among boys comparatively best LB of all time 2) Reggie White - best D Lineman 3) Ronnie Lott - best safety 4) Ray Lewis 5) Deion Sanders

Hace un mes
Brandon Shannon
Brandon Shannon

@Sixplicit Great points!!! But here is deal breaker in my opinion. Lott played in an era where the league was still transitioning to passing. The offenses were very vanilla and most teams employed basics sets with 3 Wr being considered “exotic.” Reed played in the era of offensive explosions with athletes all over the field at the WR and TE position. RBs in Reed’s era were catching more passes than some WR is Lott’s era. Reed still dominated his era. He literally had some of the greatest QBs (Manning, Brady, Elway) of all time confused and were scared to make a mistake in his vaginitis. Reed literally erased the back half of the field. For these reasons I say Lott can’t cover like Reed. And I would take Reed 9 out of 10 times over Lott. But I respect your opinion. You made a great argument!!! Salute to a healthy debate.

Hace un mes
Sixplicit +1
Sixplicit

@Brandon Shannon I mean Ed Reed has 64 interceptions, 6 sacks, 11 Forced Fumbles, 13 recoveries, and 643 Tackles vs Lott’s 63 interceptions, 8.5 sacks, 16 Forced Fumbles, 17 Recoveries, 1146 Tackles. Think both have 9 post season interceptions. Lott led league twice in interceptions. Reed led league 3 times. Reed did more after he had ball in hand. But Lott can cover. Lott was more of a force on field. People dropped balls because they were scared of getting smashed. Lott was 1st team all pro 8 times and Pro Bowl 10 times as well as All decade team two decades and 4 time SB winner. Reed was 1st team all pro 5 times and Pro Bowl 9 times as well as All Decade team one time and 1 time SB winner. I think it’s close but Lott takes the cake for me. But to say Lott was no where near the cover safety is a bit crazy as they were close. Reed gets the slight edge on coverage interceptions. Sean Taylor did not have enough time in NFL to rank him as over Lott or Reed.

Acho's argument against Deion doesn't hold water. Deion got left alone for an entire quarter BECAUSE OF THE LEVEL OF COVERAGE HE WAS PROVIDING. Opposing qbs learned quick not to pass on Deion cause it was most likely a pick. Acho, learn what bigger impact actually means. Luke over Deion, smh.

what's difficult is you can swap these guys and still be right. deion, rod, ronnie, ed. as far as dbs. aaron, bruce, reggie. lt, ray, dt, luke was a helluva lb but in his same era pat willis was great too! i don't want to hint to a niner bias. so, i kept most off. haley could be on this list. nobody could block him. bruce to me has the best moves. reggie just raw power. strahan has the numbers, kevin greene numbers but think about watt! dude was simply unstoppable, then his body broke down. sam huff or jack lambert were just as dominant to me. butkus. just tossing cats around.

Never did I ever think I’d see a list where Deion is higher than Ray Lewis. I think these lists were rigged.

@Nick Hewes Dont know how you can say that when they play two different positions and both arguably greatest CB and MLB ever in Deion Sanders and Ray Lewis
