Like Lucas would be like "Well, I'm justified! It serves you right since you hit me like a baseball now and again, when we're alone." Lake's violence in the end, therefore, if you want to call it that, was conceived from years of psychological abuse by his brother, but not before that. But, him hiding the dead body and pretending to be his brother is chilling. Probably self-preservation in his eyes, but even so. So you are still right that both twins has faults. But the word "violence" is probably incorrect. (Edit: Oh, unless you are talking about the push... Well, in Lake's eyes, his property [toy car] was about to get broken, so in his anger, a small push is a justified self-defense to protect his property [and for all Lake's bullying]. But probably not a recurring thing from before lest Lucas tattles on him for being violent. And they'll probably more likely believe Lucas. Lake also probably initially thought that Lucas won't die from a push.)

@Basically Trash A few things: 1)they're right next to a dump, the road doesn't seem to be well taken care of, and they don't see any cars. That seems pretty close to being closed down entirely and I'd believe it if someone told me it was. 2) Tripping doesn't tend to break your leg. The most you could get from that would maybe be a twisted ankle, and anything less would have to be immobilizingly painful in order to prevent him from getting up.

I love their character designs. Usually, the bad guys in stories would be dressed similar as Lake, and the "nerds" (glasses stereotype) would be more preppy, clean, and in a lot of cases, always the victim of some bully of sorts. It's really nice and refreshing change.

Interesting comment. In my experience, the "bad guys" often have clean, sharp appearances. The rough-looking types are (mostly) the nicest, genuine people I've ever met. As the saying goes: 'Don't judge a book...

If you were only to find blood traces, well there won't be any. But if the victim doesn't get immediate care after life threatening symptoms; aka they stop breathing, passed out, not responding to sounds, etc. That will lead to their death. This theory could imply that Lake had been too scared to ask for help, or succumbed to his fears thanks to their social circle; either which have caused Lucas to die a slower & more painful death than he should've. (For a child anyway)

Didn’t see many people point it out, but I like how color is used in specific parts of the short, specifically in the junkyard scene and onwards. To understand you need to know that Lucas wears a blue shirt and lake wears a red one. While Lucas lures lake into the junkyard with his toy car, he’s in “control” so the area/surroundings are blue-ish. Contrarily, at 2:54 once lake takes control, the scenery turns red.

In the Credits, You can actually see that Lake put up the missing poster of himself. You can see that because the arm that’s shown putting up the poster has a mark on it, the mark is the exact one on Lake’s clothes and the mark is also in the exact location shown.

Honestly, when the boys entered the broken car field, I thought at some point, LAKE would be the one to get hurt and make Lucas feel bad about everything he's done to him. But OH MY GOD, I was NOT expecting Lucas to die and be replaced by his brother. This took a dark twist and I loved it.

The ending... Lucas actually died(?) and Lake took his brother's place. The proof is the scratches on "Lucas"' uniform sleeve and his left cheek, his rather messy hair, the way he responds to Mrs. J about "Lake"'s absence (compare 0:06 to 3:35) and the red car in his backpack. With that, Lake "erased himself" from existence and was reborn as a "new Lucas".

I feel like I’ve read some true crime stories just like this. Spine chilling. But I think it’s so important to take the damaging effects of bullying seriously. If one kid is always telling on the same kid, there’s probably more to the story.

Watching this vid makes me even more grateful for having great siblings, sure my little sister can be annoying at times but we both truly do love each other.

The chilling feeling of this. This film was incredibly made and the fact I thoughts was lake that got hit by the car but it was Lucas. There is so much foreshadowing within this.. lake playing with his car, the sketch with the scissors, the owls which I believe are omens of death? The reflection in the glasses and more. 3:11 if u look closely, you can see LUCAS was run over and Lake didn’t die Hence why it shows the glasses etc. In the scene after, LAKE dresses up as LUCAS. This animation is dark. Now what’s sad is that I believe Lake had a disorder.. this is just a thought though. But I believe if Lucas were to go missing this would create a problem for Lake and if Lake went missing no one would care… Basically Lake Looses either way

Look at Lake's missing child picture. It's cropped, Lucas is looking perfect (from how much i can see) and Lake is angry/ doesn't even wanna be there. That's the only picture his parents found/have of him. It shows how much he was ignored considering no one even had a decent pic of him

I loved it, this short film had a twist ending I adored, but the fact that the car that hit Lake just didn't stop and kept driving is... I dunno weird? Well I could assume the driver was drunk, and the car has to keep driving so that Lucas hides the body of his brother to not be suspected, but it's still so awesome, give a big applause to this creator everyone 👏

I interpret it as Lake only taking Lucas's place because he had no other choice. Think about it, if Lucas the 'good' kid died, everyone would blame Lake for doing something since everyone knew Lake already hated his twin brother, not knowing Lucas was much, much worse. It feels somewhat poetic that the brother Lucas bullied to become more liked is the one who took his coveted position.

I'm a twin myself and to be frank this is a very good representation of what being a twin is like. Every one I've met has liked my twin sister more then me and has constantly compared me to her. Shes not a bad person, we both hate it but other people thing it's ok to compare us because we look the same. Ice had friend openly talk about whick twin they like more in front of me, and may of my closs friend have used my sister. It creates so may insecurities when everyone around you compares you to someone else.

whether or not Lucas deserved it, his death was caused by himself, Lake merely foreshadowed it. Lucas was the one to steal the toy car to make Lake follow, he was the one to run into the junkyard and taunt lake into coming with, he was the one to threaten to break lake's car in a fit of anger from just hearing the truth, and he was the one to make his brother hate him, meaning lake didn't have the reason to care about how his brother was hurt. It's entirely fair to blame Lucas, he's the one who built the trap

The scariest part in my opinion is the fact no one but the creator will truly know who got hit by the car. We can speculate which one did but we don't know if it's right or wrong. I personally think Lake got hit by the car and Lucas is somewhat guilty and scared so refuses to say anything. Because of that guilt he keeps Lake's toy car and would most likely take car of it.

Honestly, Lucas' death was no great loss. The kid was clearly a sociopath, playing authority figures like a fiddle and manipulating his fellow classmates to turn his brother into the perceived black sheep while Lucas himself was actually the bad child with no respect for authority and a sadistic desire to make Lake's life hell. Lake became Lucas cuz he just wanted to have friends and be seen as the good boy he really was. The fact that even his own parents couldn't tell that Lucas was actually Lake disguised as Lucas shows what kind of home life the boys had as well.

Honestly, this chilled me and gave me “there’s a man in the woods” vibes. The fact that Lucas purposely tried to make it out for him to be the hero and only said sorry in his time of need is just insane. Also, I find it odd no one has found Lucas’s body yet, like, did the car come back? Did lake bury him? What happened?

Lucas died and, since Lake knew that, if he told someone they would either not believe him or try to pin the blame on him, he decided to cash in Lucas good reputation by pretending to be him. He also puts up a missing poster for himself to both fool people and allow Lucas ( who is probably wearing Lake's clothes now) to be found. Because, despite the rivalary, i do think Lake cared about Lucas. If you watch the video, it seems like he was about to help Lucas before the car came up.

The one thing I love most in this short is that when Lake replaces Lucas and tells Mrs. J that "Lake's" late again the I dont know the word but the whole perspective kind of filters into a red color? I'm bad at words but the red makes it look very eerie as Lake starts his life as his brother Edit: Its the subtle atmosphere change as well as the soft music playing, very eerie and scary to me atleast

In the junk yard scene, red represents Lake and blue represents Lucas. I think the background turns red to reiterate that Lake took Lucas' place.

What I really like about this film is the foreshadowing. When Lake appears late to class, he kicks Lucas in the ankle. And the next scene shows Lake running a rock over with his toy car while looking at Lucas, foreshadowing the car running the boy over while Lake isn't paying attention. It was in front of our faces all this time and I was nOT expecting that ending, it was so dark and unique and I love it!

It’s a nice detail how the background is twisted like how Lake’s thoughts are twisted because Lucas continues to torment him. And at the end there is no warping and it’s how it should be but it shifted from blue to red as if Lake “sees red” cause he’s quite evidentially, pretty pissed off.

The real kicker is knowing that no one will recognize that they're interacting with the wrong twin. He did such devious things to his brother in order to be "liked". Yet, in the end, no one knew him well enough to see the difference. No one will realize that an imposter took his place, because that's how surface level his "popularity" was. They weren't his friends.

this films inspire me to be better towards kids cause we have this notion in society now days that any kid or even person in general that "they do something bad, they are bad and must be punished and pushed away" and thats not true... a bunch of times specially for kids, if someone is doing things that are considered wrong we shouldnt just punish them and push them away, otherwise nobody learns anything, they should be taught and be gives some compassion and understanding, otherwise we are destined to repeat the same actions of the past, thats why we have to stop this notion that someone does something bad they have to be solely punished, there are people who deserve to be given a second chance and taught to be better and such, even adults can learn and grow to be better

I'm glad that the bird with the dead mouse was added in that scene before the brother died. It kind of prepares the audience for the death that's about to happen, and kinds of symbolize how the protagonist would carry the identity of a dead child.

This reminds me of a novel I read when I was a kid but it was targeted to an older audience (like 4th grade me reading an 8th grade book or something) and it was the same concept of the twin replacing the other except they were girls. One was popular but she wasn't mean like Lucas here. She switched outfits on a ski trip with her twin (who was the main character) to give her a chance to be popular or something. On the ski lift, the popular one, now dressed as the unpopular one, sat on the ski lift in front of her sister and friends (who were none the wiser of who they were actually sitting by). The ski lift broke and the main character watched her popular sister die in front of her. And so she has to pretend to be a popular sister because everyone thinks it's the unpopular one that died. More stuff happened and whatnot but I can't remember much of it. Besides near the end where her parents were like "we knew it was you all along" and I call BS on that cuz there was a whole ass funeral so what parent would just go along with it?? Idk it was a weird book and I cant remember the name of it. But this short made me think of it after all these years.

I AM OBSESSED!!!? /!? I COMPLETELY EXPECTED THIS TO BE THAT CLICHE FILM WHERE THEY GET ALONG IN THE END BUT NOT AT ALL!!! THE FORESHADOWING TOO?? LAKE DRAWING LUCAS DEAD ON THE TABLE, LUCAS SAYING "YOU WISH YOU WERE ME", THE TOY CAR, ONLY LUCAS' REFLECTION SHOWING IN THE CAR WINDOW??? So good. LOVED it.

Now that's what I call the dark ending. I love it
