Magnus Carlsen was only 13 years old here.
Prince of Chess directed and produced by Øyvind Von Doren Asbjørnsen. See the whole film here: www.princeofchess.com . This was at the Reykjavic Rapid 2004 tournament where some of the world's best players competed.
A rapid game between the past and future world champion? 2 of the worlds greatest players indeed. I wonder what would happen if they were to play now.
Interesting that sometime after this, Kasparov started coaching Carlsen for a while.

@Jan Snauwaert I once had an opponent like Kasparov (in demeanor, that is, i… whilst I’d like to say I’m quite proficient I am not the kind of guy for world championships I’m afraid) Anyway, we sat down, did our customary handshake and off we were, and he looked like he was about to shove the checkered board down my throat. It was absolutely incredible. Didn’t say a word, had his head resting on his hands most of the time, glaring at me with his almost rage-filled eyes. I’m pretty sure it was some form of tactic, because truth be told, I was pretty intimidated. Not because of any immediate threat, it was just… pretty uncomfortable sitting there, and I actually ended up not winning because of it.

Y’all gotta understand that Kasparov as a grandmaster has everything to lose here and Magnus a 13 year old boy still has much ahead of him and no pressure would be on him at this point.

You don't become number 1 if you can't handle pressure. Pressure is out of the equation here.

@Josh H so what's more impressive? a kid that is just as fast as usian bolt or usain bolt himself? its the kid and now that you have that answer just apply tye same logic here.
Hace 3 díasJosh H
@Ian Cassady That kid is still a chess GM, plus Kasparov managed to win as white and draw as black. Is that not good enough? Not to mention, Kasparov was only a year older than Magnus when he was at the same elo as Magnus here.
Hace 3 díasJosh H
@Rakurai Kasparov was rated as 2830? at the time compared too the 2550 Magnus. Checking win probabilities, Kasparov only had a 50% chance of winning both matches and there was a 25% chance a game would end in a draw. Seems like a very likely conclusion, no?

Obviously Kasparov had an immense pressure not to lose to a 13yo and #700 in the world. BUT... damn did Magnus as a kid made him shit bricks during the whole game. The amount of confidence at 13 years of age from Magnus is outstanding. 3:13 I think Kasparov did that move on purpose since Magnus wasn't looking at the board at the time. Little did it work when the kid came back running to make his move knowing exactly what he had moved and making Kasparov even MORE nervous. Kasparov was terrified of 13yo Magnus!

It's not a physical conflict and not really relevant. Kasparov was playing mind games. @SageX98 I can see where you're coming from because yes you are right, having the expectation from others to win every single time you play is not a healthy lifestyle to surround you in. That being said. You do understand that they both very much enjoy playing and winning in chess? They have other hobbies and that aren't competitive or maybe even play for fun where it's not about winning. also im fairly sure that if they go to tournaments and win, they don't go home with a feeling of ,,another day, another win. god I wish I could just lose for once! " -no, they go home. celebrate another victory with friends and family. it's a matter of perspective. and don't take this the wrong way. but it's sound like you're reflecting some coping mechanism due to some personal losses; telling yourself its okay to not win every single time every now and then. which it is. because it's all about perspective.

Way too many people impressed by Carlsen walking around. Here’s the thing: they played two games. Carlsen lost one of them. And In this game he only managed a draw, and it’s a shame because at a certain point In the game he had a pawn advantage. Now of course Carlsen is young so he has a lot of energy, this is probably why he stood up so often. Had he done it because of the whole “power move” aspect you are all talking about then it didn’t work because he blew a winning position. He never officially played Kasparov again, so it’s a shame he didn’t beat him when he had a clear advantage. But I personally believe this is because he was young and had a lot of energy, not because he was trying to be cocky like you all think.

@Luke Strole yeah, but people act like Magnus crushed him. Magnus had a very difficult game, sure its very impressive for someone this young against the world champion. But it's not like the game was easy for him.

@Vlad this is the gospel the greatest news you can ever hear we broke God’s law, the Ten Commandments written on our heart by our God given conscious (lying, stealing, using God’s Name in vain, looking with lust which is adultery in the heart, hating our brother, our neighbor, anyone, is murder in the heart etc.) Jesus paid our fine on the cross with His death and shedding of blood. He took our punishment on the cross, God pays us in death for our sin and while Jesus did not deserve to die He did so willingly to save us from sin and death and hell and give us life forever, He paid our sin debt on the cross in His life’s blood to save us all. Jesus rose again from the dead and by His blood our sins are forgiven. Jesus is alive forever as He is King of kings and Lord of lords and He saves all who put their faith and repent of sin, confess and forsake it genuinely and in Truth. God can legally let us live forever, we broke His law Jesus paid our fine, He can do what is legal and just and right let us walk on judgment day when we all give account to God for our lives. in response to what God has done you have to put your faith in Jesus to save you and repent of sin turn from it and deny self pick up cross daily and follow Jesus. when you put your faith in Jesus and repent of sin, confess and forsake genuinely you have God's promise you have life eternal as a free gift, God promises this, God Who cannot lie. God will also give you The Holy Spirit to abide with you forever to guide, help and comfort you in life as well as God will give you a new heart and spirit that loves righteousness that is a personal miracle for sin loving humans, so if you want a personal miracle seek after God with a whole heart and you will find Jesus, follow God’s ways and watch His work in your life He will never leave or forsake you and never let you down. read your Bible God’s perfect Word ask The Holy Spirit to guide you as Jesus is The Living Word, ask The Holy Spirit to guide you in all confidence and God will in Jesus Name we pray amen always remember Jesus loves you that is why He saves us all! ✝️❤️ when you have put your faith in Jesus, repented of sin u are born again and are saved u have been transferred from the kingdom of darkness into The Kingdom of Light, from death to Life, the path to hell to Life eternal in heaven with God and Jesus in Jesus Name we pray amen obey Jesus, His Word, He and God will make His home Their home with u, God with you always in The Holy Spirit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ixyuvdo_Sjg when you are born again, when you put your faith in Jesus and repent of sin (confess and forsake) God will give you a new heart and spirit that loves righteousness instead of sin and corruption. that is a personal miracle for sin loving human beings so if you want a personal miracle humble yourself before God seek after God with a whole heart and you will find Him. Jesus said if anyone desires to come after me let him deny himself and pick up your cross daily and follow Jesus, to obey His Word in for God and Jesus to come and make Their home with you, the power of God through The Holy Spirit. God is knocking at the door and it is your choice to open or not https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZdv-TtiMkg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgzD_yNdacA
