Antique Italian Coffee Grinder - Restoration

In this video I'm restoring a very unique looking antique italian coffee grinder. I recieved this coffee grinder a few weeks ago as a gift from a subscriber from Italy. He sent me a picture of it, asking me if I want it on Instagram and I said yes immediately. I really liked the unique look of it and its design.
At first I thought this would be a very simple straight forward project. It would soon turn out how wrong I was. The two big wooden parts became a real challenge to restore. It would be rather easy to make new ones, but I really wanted to keep the original ones and restore them. As the bottom piece was warped a lot and was also 3mm oval I couldn't just machine it all clean right away, otherwise I would need to take off way to much material. I decided to try to bend it back flat by soaking in water for a day and than clamp it flat and let it dry. Fortunately my plan worked out and the pice got almost flat again, to my surprise it also became round again within 0.5mm. The reliefed stress made a few cracks appear. I filled them all with a mix of epoxy glue and sawdust. After that I was able to machine it nicely and didn't loose to much on its original size.
The wooden top was rather easy to restore compared to the bottom. Because it had a very loose fit in the body, I decided to machine that diameter clean and glue on a sleeve. That worked very well and then I just had to remake the slots in the sleeve with my rotary tool by following the existing ones.
The color choice was also quite a difficult task on this project. I changed my mind a few times and even repainted the body. First I painted the outside in corn yellow, but that looked very bad with the dark wood. After alot of thinking I decided to püaint it in light ivory, which in my opinion was the absolute correct decission. It matches the dark wood very nice and also works nicely together with the gold.
Overall I'm very happy how this coffee grinder turned out.

I hope you like my work and the video.

I really like seeing the small finishing steps that didn't exist in the original manufacturing process. It makes me wonder if the company didn't think to add finishing touches or that manufacturing has just gotten better as a whole.

What he does is common place for machinist, things would be very expensive if they were all made individually, and with that much attention to detail. Your average person wouldn't even be able to afford that coffee grinder if it were made that way.

I absolutely love what you're doing. As a coffee enthusiast, this video was particularly endearing to watch :) One thing I would consider here though is replacing the burr completely. Technically it's functioning (as we saw at the end of the video) but these things really must have sharp and extremely precise edges, otherwise the grind quality will be subpar. With blunt edges, burrs crush beans instead of cutting them, and this leads to uncontrolled and uneven grinding.

It might be possible to turn this into a functional grinder by retrofitting with modern burrs, maybe from a timemore or 1zpresso grinder, also adding a midpoint shaft stabilizer to reduce burr play. The edges on the inner burr shouldn't have been smoothed down, but the original burr set was toast no matter what

You are a master. I wish I could take the time to do these kinds of restorations. It's great to salvage disused items, bring them back to useful life just to honor who created them. Congratulations from Mexico.

I've never seen one of these in brand new condition. Even in movies set in a time period where these would have been new, they always seem to be relics. It's beautiful!

I was terrified that I wouldn’t see him grind some beans. As ALWAYS he used the item he presented to us. What a great human being.

Loved the big custom made jig made one off just to straighten the wooden base! What a perfectionist. What a champion turning the mundane into items of beauty that they never were when new!

Good idea to recess the base, so future warping doesn't cause it to wobble.

You did a brilliant job as usual. Far better than I could ever do. My one concern though is the turning knob, I would have reversed the thread as its operation will cause it to unscrew.

This was very entertaining to watch. Restoration is an art form unto itself. Your shop skills are excellent and filming superb. About the only thing that would make your videos better would be a shop will old tools and classic old machines. An old engine lathe is an art form too! Wakodahatchee Chris

@Catiku O brave new world \ That has such people in't! Your entire sentence is a claim, and a highly dubious one at that. Plenty of folks find it convenient to have an intangible, semi-plausible and non-disprovable excuse they can pull out any time they feel the need to shield themselves from the vicissitudes of life. Such as when convincing an employer to provide a paid "mental health day". Others are just in the habit of exaggerating their otherwise normal quirks by latching onto formal sounding medical terminology. Gone are the days when conformity was king and being normal was desirable. Especially the young and the left-leaning are eager to play up how unique and different they are, and quickly grow belligerent at the mention of the word 'normal'. Instead of seeing their flaws as weaknesses to be overcome, they now go out of their way to nurture their every frailty and infirmity. They moreover have the gall to demand that everybody else bend over backwards to accommodate and even "celebrate" their flaws. It's a strange state of affairs.

@J Hemphill anxiety isn't something you can claim. Its not an emotion, its a mental disease. I think what you mean is "im not fragile enough to claim feeling anxious..." Just saying.
