I have watched so many videos teaching art, in different mediums etc, and have never felt the need to take notes like I do with this! While I use acrylics, it's the steps, form and colors that I take out of it. It is simply put, to the point, with lots of tidbits and as I am just becoming interested painting faces, this will really help my confidence in giving it a go. I now feel I have a great a foundation to practice and evolve. Even with my pencil work too! Thank you so much!!

Ben, thank you for this descriptive video. You break it down into simple zones, warm and cool (and hot) and describe all the little bits of information you use to describe the facial planes. I've struggled so much to understand that; you were very helpful. I will try my first oil portrait now. Brand new to painting, and you have inspired me to just try, just do it! Also, your accent makes me feel like I am in a room with my Netherlands family. Just lovely. I'll be watching all your videos now.

Thank you for sharing all of your expertise! I’m a plein air artist that began with portraiture and then moved to the northern mountains of New Mexico, Santa Fe to study portraiture but then began doing the landscape. I’m visiting portraiture again and I wanted to compliment you on your painting and teaching techniques! I happened to notice a German accent maybe. I’m 1st generation here and come from a family of artists. My uncle lives in Worpswede, an art colony. I live in Taos which is an artist colony too. Anyway, thx so much ! Looking forward to doing this again. Maybe a self portrait!

Thank you so much Ben 🙏 your tutorials are so informative and helpful . I'm confused about shadows... Are they only "always warm" for portraits or does that apply to all other subjects too? If so why do so many artists use payne's gray for shadows? Thank you again, you are such a lovely and true gentle-man 😊 Mary from Australia 🤗😎
Hace un añoBen Lustenhouwer
@Ethics&Existentialism Payne´s gray will be overused of course because it is a short cut.
Hace un añoEthics&Existentialism
@Ben Lustenhouwer oh thank you so much! Yes, I thought/learnt that in natural light shadows are cool and in artificial light they are warm. Thank you for clarifying... And I never use payne's gray either... I always felt it was overused by people and too blue/cool... I usually mix my own purple-gray, or use sepia, but now will use your green/red mix for portraits! Your videos are fabulous, I couldn't wish for a better teacher 🙏 thank you again Ben.
Hace un añoBen Lustenhouwer
Thank you Mary. I also made a video on warm and cool colors. https://youtu.be/9YMPI3Dg6i4 That might give you an idea. Payne´s gray for shadows is an easy option but not for me. I´d like to see more colors in the shadow.
