I sort of laugh in a way. You can tell British farriers are very well experienced with draft horses versus American farriers. You don't have to have some ridiculous contraption/tying feet into place, etc. like almost every American farrier I've had to use with my Gypsy mare. Being British-born (Scots) it's like pulling teeth to get Americans to understand she'd be fine been treated like any other horse just she's bigger.

My horse was 31 in 2018 and thus had to be put down due to age related issues. I miss these sounds, just standing and holding the lead while the farrier worked. It's soothing to listen to. And dang that's a big hoof! I had a little tiny Arabian! I'd love to meet a Shire one day though. I've heard they're incredibly gently. And this one is being very good.

I don’t know how I started watching these videos, but they are so interesting to watch! I don’t know anything about horses and this looks painful but I know people say it isn’t. A few questions if anyone has time to answer them for me. :) 1) How often do horses need this done? 2) What is the soft part that gets cut? That looks painful! 3) Why do they burn the hoof with the shoe? 4) When we see bits of red showing, is that blood? Thank you 😀🐴
Hace 3 mesesPaige Hill
1) It really depends on both the horse and the area it lives. For example, if a horse lives majority of it's life on soft grass, or on hard wood, it would differ, the grass needing to be clipped more often then the wood. But if there was a mixture of surfaces (rock, wood, grass etc.), then it would be needed less. 2) The soft part is known as the 'frog', no pain at all. 3) The shoe shape and design is burnt on so that the farrier knows where to clip more or file more, the shoe has to be a perfect fit, and burning the shoe shape on helps to see where needs to be altered or fixed. 4) No, that's just the inside of the hoof, there will usually be no blood, unless there is something (a rock etc.) in the hoof, or the farrier has gone to deep.
Hace 12 díasPaula Doucette
@Kevin Roe thank you for the info 😀😀
Hace un mesKevin Roe +2
I believe they put the hot shoe on to help complete the seat where the shoe will sit in order to give a more even uniformed fit and to create a sort of seal as to help keep moisture and debris from getting in between the shoe and hoof creating hoof rot sooner than expected.

There have been farriers for over 2000 years. As old a craft as it is, as long as humans are here and horses are with us...we will always need them. My fascination is watching the continuation of an ancient skill that's just as relevant and necessary now as it was when it was 1st invented. This is one art, and to me it is an art, a machine will NEVER be able to replace.

No. Hooves are primarily made of keratin, like your fingernails and toenails. They only feel pain if a farrier hits the blood vessels, much like when you hit the quick of your nail. Otherwise, it feels much like when you get a manicure. No pain.

Are horses normally adapted to this type of treatment? or over time it gets easier the more you do it with them? And do horses know you’re there and get excited to get a hoof trimming?
Hace un mes𒊊𒃲
I'm in no way qualified, but reading from other people commenting under these genre of videos: the horses learn how to behave during theses procedures, usually at the same time as when they learn how to let people clean their hooves. They get accustomed with this, especially when it's a smooth experience. They appreciate it even more when it gets rid of a foot pain (caused by overgrown or cracked hoof preventing them from correct posture and movement). I haven't seen any mentions of the horses being excited by getting their nails done.

@Riley Munkholm if the horse is well trained since birth, it has learned to accept it even if it's not exactly pleasant for most. A horse unfamiliar with the farrier is a real pain in the backside and can be very dangerous too. My old mare has to be sedated every single time the farrier comes because she was not taken care of before I got her in 2019 (she was 20 when I bought her, pregnant and very thin but the worst was her painful flat feet). Since last month, her feet are finally the right size and shape, but it literally took over 2 years of intense monthly care and she doesn't feel pain anymore, she now runs and jumps, but if the farrier arrives before the sedative is in full effect, she still gets wild... I'm traumatized by her violent reactions. When she gave birth, I did not waste time in getting her filly accustomed to people taking and cleaning her feet. Got a black eye once because I was too obsessed with teaching her and she got upset I guess. Now, she's good at giving her feet by a touch or a command, although I'm still working on keeping her foot up for longer periods of time without her squirming away. It's really a teaching process to have them just sit there and let it happen.
