This is a 1982 Pontiac Trans Am that was left in a garage for 27 years. I purchased it for $4,500, detailed it for 2 days, then sold it for a profit to a Trans Am fanatic! The before and after transformation was huge and overall was an extremely rewarding detail. Enjoy! - L

Technically it’s not a barnfind,I completely understand what you are saying but a barnfind is a classic or antique vehicle that has been stored for years/decades and pretty much forgotten about, most of the times they are found in Barnes, outbuildings and such, this car was kept in the garage and was probably seen on a daily basis, again,I’m not trying to be the word police,

Just a tip for any detailers out there, from a painter. Your mil thickness gauge tells you total thickness of dry material, including undercoats. So your paint thickness could be say, 8 mil, and you could only have 1 mil of clearcoat to work with.

Larry, this video made me cry with joy! Seriously. I lost my father last year and in 1986 he bought a 1984 Manual Trans Am off the boat here in Australia. Black with grey trim. He kept it in top condition. The car passed to me and as much of a money pit that it is, it runs well and due to the memories I just cant sell it. Thanks for rekindling my passion for this vehicle and motivating me to keep it detailed and pristine. Keep up the great work!

Brings back so many memories, I had an 82 like this in silver and an 83 with the cross-fire fuel injection. I remember someone was smart enough to have wired the hubcaps on and I think you can still get a lug wrench in there. I could be mistaken and it's been over 30 years since I owned it.

Great video and even showing the amount paid and what it sold for, but how long did it take to get into such a great condition? and if you were just going to detail it for the original owner what would it roughly cost??

I am loving watching these videos. Reminds me of when I was a kid and my dad went to a county auction and purchased 12 county owned cars. Half of them sat in a field here in Florida with the windows down. They were literally rolling swamps. I spent the next month scrubbing the heck out of those things and helped my dad double his money. Ended up with a nice 94 cargo astro van for my troubles. Still one of my favorite vehicles. The engine in that thing lasted forever.

Thx for all the wonderful comments! Chuck is thrilled we got the car out of the garage so quick, I'm happy to get the TA to a great home, and the new owner is OVER THE MOON excited about his new project. It was a win win win. I check Hagerty valuation tool with the exact VIN # for those of you wondering. I wish I could put a screen shot up here, but it says the lowest value (poor condition, not running, bits of rust, mold, etc etc...) = $1,560. The average price in GOOD condition (not great or concours but running) is $7,300. So I think Chuck got a fair value for his car 1. In that condition, not having to remove/flatbed/used car lot etc... 2. Having it done within 2 days and no hassles with posting on the internet, 3. Cash in hand 4. Paid his price (which was a bit more than what the valuation tools suggested, but at the end it worked out. At the time, I was unclear what the "instagram world" would pay for it all cleaned up. Nervous at first, but happy in the end) 5. Grandson made some loot for an email and phone call. Not bad at all :) Hindsight being 20-20, I think I paid more than fair value price for a 3rd gen TA in that condition (per Hagerty), and the new owner paid top dollar (according to Hagerty) because he wanted that specific 4-speed and transmission. So still worked out. I'm unclear why that particular tranny is so desirable, but nonetheless he was very happy to be the first to get the TA before the 4 others. Super glad that EVERYONE made out and we were able to film it for an episode. Isn't it crazy that YOUTUBE IS FREE TO WATCH as a viewer. Yeah there's ads...but on TV you PAY to watch Ads (that you cant skip). Grateful for such a open platform.

"Hindsight being 20-20, I think I paid more than fair value price for a 3rd gen TA in that condition" Is that a joke? $4,500 for that car was a steal. All you did was clean and polish it, and then you sold it for over twice what you paid for it. Imagine making $6,000 on a car just for cleaning and polishing it and then thinking you overpaid for the car. It's not as if you did anything substantial like replacing or patching rusted-out floorboards, subframe rails, trunk floor, rocker panels, or rear quarter panels. That car appeared to be rust-free, even underneath; no accident damage, and factory paint that looked to be in great condition, only needing cleaning and polishing, as opposed to, you know, a whole new paint job after it has areas of filler and primer all over it from weeks' or months' worth of fixing a bunch of body rust. In other words, that car was already in "GOOD" condition, and in my neck of the woods, where cars rust like it's their job, that car might as well have been "mint." What you did was a walk in the park compared to what needs to be done to 40-year-old rust buckets around here just to make them halfway decent.

Awesome work as always, Larry! A lot of people commenting on the large profits from the flip but let's face it, the original owner wasn't going to get it detailed to anywhere near this level before selling it. Why don’t people realise that businesses are there to make a profit, and at times also make a loss that has to be covered. When you factor in the time to find the car view the car trailer or get the car back to the studio, the time spent cleaning it and the cost of the products used, then the tax that the business has to pay on the profits it all dwindles down. I came across your videos a couple year ago Larry and wanted most of them and learned so much detailing tips and tricks from you as well as you can’t just wash them in California when you had to put the large mat down when you did the red Lamborghini. Also from your vids I have learnt so much from Kevin buff daddy Great work, loved watching your studio build too, thinking of it that was during lockdown so been watching your channel now for about three years.
Hace 2 mesesAdmin Account +28
@ AMMO NYC. If you broke down the total investment of your education, network, shop, insurance, staff, tools, and overhead to make that $6,000 if nothing else you were being incredibly fair if not cheap selling it. If anyone thinks you made too much you should invite them to spend the $2 million plus you have to get where you are so they can make their own $6k and see if they think it's too much.

Make sure that you look into purchasing additional hubcap clips. I have owned several 82 Trans Am‘s over the years and without having additional clips to support the hubcaps, they will fly off very quickly. Do not trust the original clips as they are always a problem. I even resorted to putting a little bit of masking tape in the grooves on the backside of the hubcap to prevent it from moving and help the clips grasp the turbo wheels better.

New York is correct. It reminds me of selling a Triumph motorcycle where the buyer agreed to my price and came only to inspect and collect. But then, he pulled out and flashed LESS in cash from his pocket. So I guess for this scheme you might also have separate stacks of additional thousands in your OTHER pocket, just in case the seller said $6K, in which case you might just happen to have $4, $5, or $6K in cash. Note also that the first person to name a number loses. This is why at the great 47th Street Photo every question was answered with a question: "Hi, how much is this Nikon F3?" which was answered only by "How much do you want to pay for this camera???"

4500$ is a steal, even for 145k miles. GM also had a recall back in 82 because the hupcaps kept flying off and they had different clips that would go on the hubcaps but nobody ever really did it. So now the best thing to do is to use zip ties to hold the hubcaps on. You have to do that all while the wheel is off so that you can attach it all without seeing the zip ties.

Those guys will get it to $30k top-notch all original making a profit themselves and she'll run for another 10-20 years until it needs a full restoration where at 60+ yrs and a flawless restoration will be like $75-$80k. I use mothers hybrid ceramic wax it's got carnuba mixed in with ceramic and it does make the paint look dam good. I use cerakote on my plastic trim. I'm thinking about getting some of the ammo products

I've never seen someone so happy about a particular type of car before. God bless them.

This car in red was my first car. Never got it running before my parents sold it off their property, so it wasn't meant to be. Awesome to see!
